#MECCE @ COP29

The MECCE Project Main Office and several partners and collaborators contributed to the UN Climate Change negotiations, otherwise known as the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), including through a side event on quality CCE and several submissions to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the global climate change prevention treaty. The UNFCCC acknowledges the importance of climate change communication and education, where it is known as ‘Action for Climate Empowerment.’

The #TeachersCOP event is an international forum that brings together educators and policymakers to spotlight the critical role of teachers in the global climate response, addresses the challenges educators face, and celebrates their contributions to climate education. The hybrid event was organized by MECCE Partner, the Office for Climate Education (OCE) in collaboration with VVOB.

Towards Climate change-resilient education systems in the most vulnerable nations

 Our partner, UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report presented this livestreamed official COP29 side event along with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Education Cannot Wait, and the Global Partnership for Education, “Towards Climate change-resilient education systems in the most vulnerable nations.”  The event was moderated by Manos Antoninis, Director of the GEM Report, UNESCO, and included speakers Issa Faye and Daouda Ndiaye (IsDB), Christopher Castle (UNESCO), Ruth Kagia (Global Partnership for Education), Graham Lang (Education Cannot Wait), and Stéphanie Winet (International Organization of Employers).

The Future Belongs to us: Youth Voices for Climate Action

Our partner, UNESCO’s GEM Report, along with Earth Guardians and Take Action Global presented this inspiring youth-led COP29 livestream event highlighting the urgent need to transform climate change education. The young advocates shared their vision for stronger climate action in schools through personal stories and bold ideas. Speakers included Kehkashan Basu (Founder, Green Hope Foundation), Angela Busheska (Founder, EnRoute), and Priya Joshi (Senior Researcher, GEMReport UNESCO). Together, they tackled the question: What do you wish you had learned in school about climate change?

Combating Climate Change Across Generations: Reinforcing Global to Local Policy Action for Education

This impactful training event was hosted by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in partnership with the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR). This session explored how global goals can be more effectively translated into local action and provided training, insights, and case studies to help local policymakers enrich education to tackle today’s pressing challenges. The event was moderated by Amber Webb, Managing Director of MECCE Project partner SDSN SDG Academy and featured a presentation by Quinn Runkle, Director of Education at SOS-UK. Ms. Runkle’s presentation included a focus on SOS-UK’s innovative “teach-the-teacher programme,” which was studied as part of the MECCE Project’s funded case studies of quality climate change education.

Meeting the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) Targets with Quality

How can we develop a unified approach to achieving quality climate education worldwide? This event features leading experts in climate education, including the MECCE Project’s Indicator Development Lead, Prof. Aaron Benavot joined MECCE Project partners the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Office of Climate Education (OCE), and Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) for an insightful discussion exploring the progress and goals of the Greening Education Partnership (GEP).
